LEVEL 144 - FIREFLIES

At first sight, this level looks so simple. Don't touch the fire, get the 30 chips, and skedaddle. But no. Melinda had to save the best for last by the addition of those annoying fireballs. (They look nothing like fireballs, in my opinion. They look like throwing stars.) She was too preoccupied in the upper levels testing Hawking equations on the origin of the universe to add a set of fire boots, too. (Yes, I copied the first part of that sentence out of the Help file.)

The way to win this level is simple: STICK TO THE GRAVEL! The fireballs can't go on gravel, leaving Chip safe. If you must leave the gravel to collect a chip or something, do it quickly.

If you're caught in a one-block wide hallway with a fireball bearing down on you, quickly do a 180 and head for the nearest gravel patch.

Near the top of the maze, there is a long east-west one-block wide hallway. You will need to follow this to the west. When you come to this (you will come to it from the south), do not take it west, but wait for a fireball to come through this hallway, let it pass you and turn right, then head for the hallway and follow it west to the nearest gravel patch.

Give the fireballs the right of way. If a fireball is heading down a hallway you were about to go for, don't try to race it unless it is absolutely necessary (i.e. there's another one heading for your position).

Finally, take your time! There is no timer on this level, so take it easy. I once died on this level with TWO CHIPS REMAINING, because I got excited. I can't tell you how painful it was to hear that dreadful voice: "Bummer." when I was that close.

Truly,

Mark Blehm

When I gave you those strategies for level 144, I forgot to include one of the most important pieces of advice for this level:

Fireballs turn right when they hit any object. This limits them to moving in a clockwise direction around the maze. So, try to move around this level in a clockwise direction, and you should be fine.
